H.E. Wahidullah Shahrani participated in an air and ground tour of the North Aynak Taghar Copper exploration drilling program in Kabul province. Officials with the Afghan Geological Survey (AGS) are concluding a 90-day drilling training program in cooperation with an Afghan-owned private drilling firm and alongside experienced geologists and geophysicists.

A total of 65 AGS employees have been assigned to this challenging training program which will provide vital skills and resources for future mining operations anticipated in the coming decade.

A Kabul-based drilling company, Central Asian Mining Services, has drilled approximately 1,700m within a predetermined minerals block in southeastern Kabul province. The drilling site is north of Aynak copper licence area, a recently tendered project with identified copper resources.

Minister Shahrani commented: “Afghanistan is building a world-class mining industry through a professional management program that will create opportunities around the communities surrounding the mines, assure a long-term revenue source to the Afghan people, and train and employ thousands of skilled workers. Today’s work on North Aynak is a step in the right direction.”

The signing of these MOUs in New Delhi further demonstrates the long-term commitments made by India to support the people and government of Afghanistan as part of the overall strategic agreement signed in 2011 between the two countries.
